Meta Flexible Ads in 2026: Where They Went and When to Use Them

Meta flexible ads moved in March 2026 from the format picker to a Flexible media toggle. Use them to scale proven assets, and run separate ads to learn which idea won.

Key takeaways

  1. 01
Flexible is no longer a separate format in Ads Manager (Meta's ad-buying dashboard). As of October 2026 the setting is Flexible media, under Format display options. Use it to scale assets that already worked, and use separate ads to learn which idea wins.
  2. 02
"Flexible ads" (the 2024 container of up to 10 images) and "Flexible media" (delivery across additional placements) are different features. Check how many assets your ad accepts instead of assuming 10.
  3. 03
Inside a flexible setup Meta decides what each person sees, so the ad's result is a blend. Test for a per-asset breakdown before you launch.
  4. 04
Our budget cap (our model, not a Meta rule): maximum assets = daily budget ÷ the least daily spend you would give one ad, so $150 ÷ $50 allows 3 assets.

Any tutorial that starts with "select Flexible as your format" now points to a menu entry that no longer exists. The replacement is easy to misread, because two different Meta features share the word "flexible."

In November 2024, Social Media Today reported both launches. Flexible ads let one ad carry 10 images, with Meta choosing which one each person sees. Flexible media was a separate option that delivered your media to placement groups. Meta's current help article describes Flexible media as delivering images and videos across additional placements when that could improve performance.

Both features hand the choice to Meta, so neither gives you an easy read on which asset worked. This page explains what each does, how to choose between a flexible setup and separate ads, which image and video sizes to prepare, and which checks to run before launch.

Where did meta flexible ads go in Ads Manager?

As of October 2026, Ads Manager lists single image or video, carousel and collection as ad formats, and Flexible is not a separate choice. The standalone Flexible format left the picker in March 2026. The behavior now sits with Advantage+ creative (Meta's bundle of automated creative options) and the Format display options below your media.

Meta's guide to creating an ad with Advantage+ creative walks through the path: in the Format section choose Single Image or Video, click Add Media, then open the Advantage+ creative section. The same guide says that with manual placements you must include the Facebook Feed placement to use Advantage+ creative.

If you cannot find the toggle, check those three things: a single image or video format, the Advantage+ creative section, and Facebook Feed among your placements. If it is still missing, the setting is not available to that campaign, and separate ads work in every account.

An ad you built under the old format may not take the newer controls. We recommend duplicating it and rebuilding the copy, so the live ad stays untouched.

What is the difference between flexible ads and Flexible media?

A flexible ad was a container of several assets from which Meta picked one per person. Flexible media is a delivery setting. Meta's description: "delivers media, such as images and videos, across additional placements when there is an opportunity to help improve the performance of your ad campaign".

We use the terms that way from here on. "Flexible ad" means the multi-asset container, which launched with room for 10 images. "Flexible media" means the toggle. A placement is where an ad appears, such as Feed, Stories or Reels.

Neither is a carousel. In a carousel you set the cards and their order, and the person swipes. A collection ad is its own layout. Meta publishes separate specifications for each in its ads guide.

Whether your ad still accepts 10 assets is something to test, not assume: add media in the Ad Creative section and see where the upload stops.

Should you use a flexible setup or separate ads?

Use a flexible setup when you want Meta to pick among assets you already trust, and separate ads when you need to know which idea won. This is our recommendation, built on how delivery works: Meta, not you, decides which asset each person sees.

Your goalUseWhyPass condition before launch
Learn whether a hook, angle or offer winsSeparate ads, one variable changedEach ad gets its own resultSame audience, budget and placements across ads
Scale assets that already workedOne flexible setupDelivery picks per person and placementAt least 3 assets with results of your own
Refresh a small audience that is tiring of one adOne flexible setupRotation happens inside the adNew assets added on a date you wrote down
Test an exact headline-and-image pairingSeparate adsThe pairing is the hypothesisOne ad per pairing
Try an angle you have never runSeparate ads first, then flexibleLearn first, consolidate laterWinner identified before it enters the set

The common mistake is using the container as a test. Putting ten new ideas into one ad feels efficient, but it is a bet that delivery will sort them out, and the result will not tell you why. Our guide to early hook signals versus conversion data shows which numbers can support a call like that.

Why can't you tell which creative won inside a flexible ad?

Because Meta spreads impressions unevenly across the assets, the ad's headline number blends all of them. A strong result does not show whether one asset carried it or all of them contributed.

Colour-block cards poured from a bowl land in uneven piles of different sizes on a table.
Delivery spreads attention unevenly, so one blended result hides which asset did the work.

Only a matched comparison in your own account answers whether flexible ads convert better than separate ads: same budget, audience and offer, one flexible ad against separate ads.

Before launch, run this test. In Ads Manager, open the Breakdown dropdown above the results table and look for Creative. Pass: each image or video appears as its own row with its own spend and results. Fail: you see only ad-level totals or placement splits. If you fail, write "ad-level read only" in your test log before launch, so you do not over-read the result later.

If you do get per-asset rows, use them to inform your next test. Do not pause assets mid-delivery on small numbers; that is our recommendation.

How do you set up a flexible ad you can read as a set?

Prepare it to scale known assets and read it as a set; single-idea tests belong in separate ads. Run each check; each one passes or fails.

  1. 1

    Toggle test.

After choosing Single Image or Video and opening Advantage+ creative, look for Flexible media under Format display options. Pass: it is visible and on. Fail: it is missing, so build separate ads.
  2. 2

    Question test.

Write one sentence: "Does this set beat my current best single ad?" Pass: it names that ad and one metric, such as cost per purchase. Fail: no named comparator or no metric.
  3. 3

    Control test.

Pass: at least one asset in the set has a prior ad with its own spend and result data. Fail: no asset does. Our guide to choosing a control ad covers what makes a fair benchmark.

  4. 4

    Budget cap.

Compute daily budget ÷ the least daily spend you would give one ad. Pass: your asset count is at most that number. Fail: more assets than the budget supports. Example with illustrative inputs, not benchmarks: $150 ÷ $50 = 3 assets. Meta does not split spend evenly, so treat the result as a ceiling.
  5. 5

    Spec test.

Pass: every asset exists in both 4:5 and 9:16 files at the sizes in the next section. Fail: either version is missing.
  6. 6

    Reporting test.

Run the Creative breakdown check from the previous section. Pass: per-asset rows appear. Fail: only totals appear.
  7. 7

    Duplication test.

Pass: the original flexible ad is unchanged and live, and the edited copy is a separate ad. Fail: you edited the live ad.

Keep a three-line log for each flexible ad: the question, the ad-level result, and the next step (give an asset its own test, split the set, or retire it). Before an asset enters the set, our guide to reading an attention heatmap shows when a view of where eyes land deserves trust.

What size should images and videos be for flexible ads?

Prepare 4:5 and 9:16 versions of every asset, and add 1:1 where Feed placements matter. Meta's specifications, as checked in October 2026:

A designer arranges three frames of different proportions, each showing the same picture cropped differently.
One asset needs several crops so it fills every placement Meta may choose.
RatioWhere it fitsSize Meta lists
4:5Facebook Feed, recommended for single-image ads

1440 × 1800 pixels for Feed images and Feed video; 1080 × 1350 in the carousel specification

1:1Supported in Feed1024 × 1024 in the carousel specification
9:16Stories and Reels, to fill the whole screen1080 × 1920

For Feed, Meta's aspect ratio guidance supports both 1:1 and 4:5. Feed images are JPG or PNG up to 30 MB with a minimum width of 600 pixels. Feed video runs from 1 second to 241 minutes, up to 4 GB. Supplying square and vertical versions of your strongest assets is our recommendation, so no placement crops an asset badly.

How do you choose which assets go into a flexible ad?

Choose them from a ranked plan, not from whatever is on the shared drive. A flexible setup is only as useful as the ideas inside it.

At Deepsolv, we build a creative intelligence platform for consumer brands and agencies running Meta advertising. It combines ad-performance data, competitor activity, customer signals and past ad learnings into ranked weekly test plans and execution-ready creative briefs. The top-ranked ideas decide what to run as separate tests and what is proven enough to scale in a flexible setup. We offer it through a personalized demo with our founding team, and pricing is something to ask about there. Book a demo.

Frequently asked questions

Dynamic creative mixes separate parts, such as images, headlines and text, into combinations. A flexible ad chooses among whole assets you uploaded. With dynamic creative you ask which element worked. With a flexible ad you ask whether the set worked.

No. A collection ad is its own layout, with its own specifications in Meta's ads guide. A flexible setup lets Meta choose among your media. The two options can appear in the same menu and still do different jobs.

No, because you do not control which asset each person sees. A split test needs separate ads that differ in one thing. Afterward, put the winner into a flexible setup if you want Meta to rotate it with other proven assets.
Flexible is no longer a format. Choose Single Image or Video, open the Advantage+ creative section, include Facebook Feed in your placements, then look for Flexible media under Format display options. If it is still missing, build separate ads instead.

The 2024 flexible ads format held up to 10 images, per Social Media Today's report. Check your own build by adding media until the upload stops, then set your cap by budget, not by the limit.
